History of the RG Niederkassel of 1978 e.V.

In 1977 some rowing-obsessed teachers and student-parents of the Kopernikus-Gymnasium decided to start a rowing club in Niederkassel. This is how our neighbor today, the rowing club of the Kopernikus-Gymnasium Niederkassel, was founded. With the support of the city council and some honorable sponsors they were able to furnish the floating boathouse that's still in use today.
Pretty soon it became obvious that the adults also were enjoying the rowing; so much, that a new club was needed to leave the students their independence in their own club.
On August 30, 1978, 21 people founded the "Rudergesellschaft Niederkassel"; shortly after that, they joined the German Rowing Association DRV. Through the first years they shared the student boathouse, several old boats were bought cheap from friendly neighboured rowing clubs. A good sign of the growth of the new club was the fact that after only two years the first new-bought boat, a C-Four, was officially taken in service. A new youth section was also being built.
Soon there wasn't enough room for both clubs in the one boathouse anymore- the RCKG kept growing as well. So the board of directors of the RGN decided in December 1982 to buy the old ferry that had been used in Mondorf since 1929 and remodel it into a floating boathouse.
After years of paperwork with the Historical Preservation Agency and for funding and a lot of self-initiative the new boathouse was opened on May 30, 1986 in the harbor of Mondorf.
The club kept growing; to this day there is a cooperation with the Gymnasium Sieglar and the Gesamtschule Oberlar, and there have been boat dedications in 1987, 1991, 1992 and 1998. This year the club will celebrate the 20-year -anniversary with a boat dedication and a race. Due to more frequent appearance at competitions and rowing tours, growing kilometer- and member-numbers are projecting a great future for this club.
